At the very top is Olajide "JJ" Olatunji, who dropped out of college, but has made $4.5m (£2.9m) in the past year, according to a Forbes list of the world's highest-paid YouTube stars.
The 22-year-old, from Watford, has more than 10 million subscribers on his KSI YouTube channel and a "social reach" of 17.4 million when other social media platforms are taken into account.
He is best known for filming himself playing computer games while commentating on them, but he also makes comedy videos and more typical vlogs.
His vlogs include one where he decided to dye his hair blond and another in which he filmed himself for a week to give his viewers a chance to see what he does when he's not posting YouTube videos.

One of these kids was in one of the boxes today, mates family (All Chelsea) were invited to a WHU bloke i knows box, mates son met one of the top you-tubers, Carroll and Sakho...Still fuck em we won!

Those boxes they send out for youtubers to open up on their channel with random nerdy stuff in such as posters of nes controllers etc are money makers as well.
They get $1000 just for opening the box on their channel, plus for every subscriber of theirs that buys one they get a cut of those profits as well.

I doubt there's a single person on this forum that falls into a demographic brands target on YouTube.
KSI is for young kids that live in their xbox. He makes a video with KFC and sales of KFC will spike... Zoella makes a video talking about a beauty product, sales will spike.
We'll watch it and think 'there's a bit of product placement'. ' Their audience/subscribers see it and think they've got to have it.
Sad state of affairs to be honest, but this is the world we live in.
A lot of the youtubers are switched on when it comes to engaging with their audiences and know when they'll get a coating for it, so get quite picky when it comes to signing up.

I think the kid is a fucking genius. He is earning sixty grand a week to let others watch him play video games.

The thing with older Internet users is that we have grown accustomed to the idea that Internet ads = bolllocks/spyware as that was always the case. In the last few years though Internet advertising is mainstream so the younger generation maybe are a bit more open to it.
I do agree with monk koknee though, surely the bubble must burst.

I just watched a bit if that KSI - what the fuck? The content is boring and the bloke isn't even funny or charismatic. I sometimes watch the hodge twins and although they spout a lot of bollocks they have charisma and a string sense of humour (even if its bit to your taste). This bloke has nothing, he's not even good looking.
in seriousness whats his demographic audience? I'm guessing 13 year old boys and young sockets?
Bizarre but good luck to the bloke, his content seems pretty positive from the little I've seen of it

I work in advertising, and specifically this area for the last year or so (working with youtubers creating content for brands).
I can categorically state that KSI is an absolute fucking tool. From first hand experience.
You get the odd one that's actually ok, but for the most part, they're idiots.
The likes of Zoella charges £50k for a few minutes of video!
The norm (not that it's acceptable) is around £3k/6k...
These fuckers make fortunes!

I wonder whether any businesses advertising on services such as Youtube, Facebook and Twitter actually know whether it is cost effective. It all seems a huge leap of faith to me. I wonder whether getting Clickthroughs, Likes, Re-tweets and Follows lead to more business. Maybe it does but just seems unlikely to me.
Personally, I have developed an instinct to filter or tune out sponsored content. Or is it getting to me unconsciously? I will close any add on Youtube as soon as I can. Can't help thinking it's all an unsustainable bubble but am probably wrong.
